Coach Dalzell is entering his fifth season as the head coach of the track AND field and cross country programs. In the first four years at Concordia, the Cavaliers have won eight conference titles (four in men's track and field, three in women's track and field and one in men's cross country) as well as a regional title in men's cross country. His programs at Concordia have produced 12 NAIA National Champions, 50 All-Americans, and eight NAIA Academic All-Americans. He has been named Regional Coach of the Year five times and Conference Coach of the Year seven times since coming to Concordia in 2005.
Concordia University is the third collegiate program he has inaugurated after launching the programs at Cascade College in 1997 and Northwest Nazarene University in 1999. In addition, he was formerly an assistant coach at George Fox University, as well as a successful coach on the high school level in both Portland and Bend. In total, Dalzell has developed 72 Cross Country and Track & Field All-Americans, 24 Academic All-Americans, and 12 National Champions. He has been named a conference or regional Coach of the Year 18 times during this time. He was named NCCAA Men's Cross Country National Coach of the Year after his 2001 men's cross country team won the national championship when all seven runners finished in the top 14, making the entire team All-Americans.
Coach Dalzell has not only been busy building the numbers and quality of the programs, but has also spent a great deal of time developing facilities and events to support the programs and community. These include the adidas XC classic, the Concordia indoor sports arena and community center, and a world class throwing center managed and directed by Concordia throws coach Mac Wilkins.
The combination of outstanding performances coupled with the facility and event development has brought great energy to the entire Concordia campus and the Northeast Portland community.
"There seems to be a great synergy within our coaching staff, the athletic department, the entire Concordia campus and the Northeast Portland community right now. This has created some great opportunities for us to develop some great concepts and events. I'm really excited about the direction the cross country and track and field programs are headed and the ways we can impact our community, city and region," Dalzell said.
Randy received a bachelor's degree in secondary education/mathematics from Columbia Christian College, where he played basketball and soccer, and was named the school's outstanding scholar-athlete. He earned his master's degree in education/physical education from Linfield College, and has done additional graduate work in biology, exercise science, and is currently working on a doctorate in sports management.
"I really enjoy helping young men and women develop in all areas of their lives, as well as pursue their athletic goals," Dalzell said. "The athletic pursuits are just a training ground for more important things in the future of these young men and women. Concordia is a great environment for the athletes to accomplish this, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to work here with such gracious and wonderful people."
He lives in Portland with his wife, Charlene, and their three children, Allison, D.J. and Matthew.
