Coach Dalzell is entering his third season as the head coach of the track & field and cross country programs. In his first year at Concordia, the program produced the men's Cascade Collegiate Conference individual cross country champion, the Cascade’s men's track & field team championship, eight track and field All-Americans, and three individual national champions. In his second year, the Cavaliers won the NAIA Region I and Cascade Conference titles in men’s cross country, had the repeat individual champion in men’s cross country, won the women’s conference championship in track & field, tied for the men’s conference championship in track & field, added two more national champions and five new All-Americans.
Coach Dalzell has not only been busy building the numbers and quality of the programs, but has also spent a great deal of time developing facilities and events to support the programs and community. These include the adidas XC classic, the Concordia indoor sports arena and community center, and a world class throwing center managed and directed by Concordia throws coach Mac Wilkins.
The combination of outstanding performances coupled with the facility and event development has brought great energy to the entire Concordia campus and the Northeast Portland community.
Coach Dalzell commented recently, “There seems to be a great synergy within our coaching staff, the athletic department, the entire Concordia campus and the Northeast Portland community right now. This has created some great opportunities for us to develop some great concepts and events. I’m really excited about the direction the cross country and track & field programs are headed and the ways we can impact our community, city, and region.”
Concordia University is the third collegiate program he has inaugurated after launching the programs at Cascade College and Northwest Nazarene University. In addition, he was formerly an assistant coach at George Fox University, as well as a successful coach on the high school level in both Portland and Bend. Along with coaching a number of All-Americans, as well as individual champions in track and field and cross-country, his 2001 men’s cross-country team at Northwest Nazarene won conference, regional, and national (NCCAA) championships, which led to his selection as the NCCAA Men’s Cross Country National Coach of the Year.
Randy received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education/mathematics from Columbia Christian College, where he played basketball and soccer, and was named the school’s outstanding scholar-athlete. He earned his master’s degree in education/physical education from Linfield College, and has done additional graduate work in biology, exercise science, and sports management.
“I really enjoy helping young men and women develop in all areas of their lives, as well as pursue their athletic goals,” Dalzell said. “The athletic pursuits are just a training ground for more important things in the future of these young men and women. Concordia is a great environment for the athletes to accomplish this, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work here with such gracious and wonderful people.”
Randy is also the Director of Placement in the College of Education at Concordia. He lives in Portland with his wife, Charlene, and their three children, Allison, D.J., and Matthew.
